Quaichs
The Highland Quaich, which originated in the Scottish Highlands, was used both for a "Cup of Welcome" and also when offering a farewell drink, usually whisky or brandy. The word is a Scots rendering of the Gaelic word "cuach", meaning a drinking cup.
It was originally made from a wooden stave, then later from horn or leather, and eventually pewter or silver. A more romantic quaich had a double glass bottom in which was kept a lock of hair, so that the owner could drink to his lady love, and in 1589 King James VI of Scotland gave Anne of Norway a quaich as a wedding gift.
The distinctive shape has remained unchanged over the centuries - a shallow drinking bowl with two handles or "lugs".
