The Highland Quaich, which originated in the Scottish Highlands, was used both for a "Cup of Welcome" and also when offering a farewell drink, usually whisky or brandy. The word is a Scots rendering of the Gaelic word "cuach"; meaning a drinking cup.

It was originally made from a wooden stave, then later from horn or leather, and eventually pewter or silver.
